Does it feel like a million things are always demanding your attention? Is every day filled to the brim with activities and tasks and work and priorities, that you seldom have a moment to slow down?

If you feel your mind is scattered or full, if you’re having a hard time focussing or sleeping, or if you can’t sort out what might be bothering you, consider making room for silence - true silence. Step away from all distractions, turn off noise, and just sit in the silence. Don’t want visual distractions either? Go ahead and close those eyes!

It can feel uncomfortable to be alone in silence, not being useful or doing anything, but keep going. You might be surprised how even just 15 minutes of silence can help calm you, help you organize your thoughts, and help refocus your attention.

And since self care is all about incorporating healthy habits and activities into your existing lifestyle, why not make room for silence every day or every week? Sound like a big commitment? Try 15 minutes every other day and go from there.

Now, we know this isn’t always easy (we see you parents and caregivers and big families!), so make it work for your specific circumstances. Maybe your silent time can be during your daily shower or after the kids’ bedtime or even right before getting out of bed in the morning.

No matter how you make room for silence, once you try it, you’ll see how nice (and important) it can be!
